Frequently asked questions

Our city news

What is Our City News?
Our City News is a bold new media initiative to put the spotlight on the City of
Johannesburg. Our team of journalists will be probing what is going wrong with the
city, what is going right, and what this means for its citizens. We will hold the city
authorities to account and put the voices of Johannesburgers front and centre.

Why Joburg? What about other cities?
Joburg is the country’s financial and economic hub. An unhealthy Joburg is an
unhealthy South Africa. It is a city we live in, love and want to see thrive, so that the
country will thrive. For that we need to tackle the city’s problems, challenges and
possible solutions. Joburg presents a big challenge for journalists – so for now we
are happy to focus on it.

Will it be independent?
Our City News is a fully independent, non-profit newsroom. Our funders have no say
in what and how we cover the city. We will collaborate with NGOS, business
organisations, trade unions and others, but our decisions will be driven by what
serves the citizens of Joburg.

Will it be all bad news?
We will also cover how citizens are dealing with the city’s issues, and what there is to
love about this vital and vibrant place.

What kind of journalism can we expect?
We are committed to producing the highest quality of interesting and challenging
journalism. We will be vigorous about facts and verification of our stories, and we will
treat all our subjects fairly. We are signed up to the Press Council Code of Conduct.

Where will we find these reports?
Our work will appear in mainstream outlets or you will be able to get it from our
newsletter, our website or our social media. Details to follow.

Who is behind this? How is it funded?
This is an initiative of the Henry Nxumalo Foundation, which supports and enables
in-depth and investigative reporting. Funding for this project has come from ASISA,
the Association of Savings and Investment SA.

Is this a long-term project?
It is a six-month pilot. If it works, we hope to extend it.

Where are you based?
We are all in Johannesburg, but it is a virtual newsroom with our team spread across
the city.

How can I contribute?
Give us tip-offs, donate, subscribe to our newsletter, follow-us on social and, most
important, read and engage with our stories.

How do I get hold of you if I have a story to tell?
For now, please email henrynxumalofund@gmail.com. We will put up more details
on our website soon.
